Artist Statement

“Love alone is Life,” written by a revolutionary spiritual thinker, Mary Baker Eddy, encapsulates my whole reason for being. It fuels my passion for progressive, healing ideas, my desire for greater compassion for all humankind, my eternal optimism, and my profound hope for the manifestation and maintenance of beauty throughout life’s expression.

It has arrived in my art through many byways: my start in the wide open skies and quiet of West Texas, surrounded by a community of creative, do-it-yourself characters; my all-embracing liberal arts education; my exposure to distinct types of people and cultures which proves that love is the common ground on which we all stand; my humility-inducing role as a parent of four children; my immensely satisfying career as a creator of characters through costume design.

Specific artistic expression beyond costume design became an unstoppable impulse, flooding out of me without really knowing how or why. I vacuum up so much daily minutiae—ideas, emotions, forms, functions, colors—that I simply need to answer their call and put them into kaleidoscopic, textural, personal artistic works.

And there would be no art from me at all if the coupling of curiosity and childlikeness didn’t exist. These are the keys that unlock the kingdom of my creativity and the force of my motivation—the full-blown yielding to openness, humbleness, and lifelong learning.
